Dry ShampooDry shampoo is spray or powder, which effectively absorbs sebum, dirt and grease particles, thus removing oily sheen and smell from the hair. It is very easy to use – just apply it on the roots of the hair and then remove the rests with a comb or brush. Therefore, dry shampoo is ideal for those who for this or that reason don’t have the opportunity or wish to wash their hair with usual shampoo and warm water.

Nowadays many commercial dry shampoos are available on the market, but it’s very easy to make them at home. Those who are into this practice claim that such home-made shampoos are no less effective than those that are sold in stores. So here are a few popular recipes:

Dry shampoo with almonds and flour. You will need 1/2 cup of flour and 1/2 cup of ground almonds. Mix the ingredients thoroughly. Sprinkle the roots of your hair with this mix and then brush it well.

Recipe with almonds and starch. Take 2 tablespoons of cornstarch, 1 tablespoon of ground almonds and 1 tablespoon of orris root (if you find some). Almonds and orris root have a very pleasant aroma so you will definitely like it on your hair. Mix the ingredients in a small bowl. Rub 1 tablespoon of the mixture into the hair roots and brush the hair from the roots to the ends carefully. Repeat if the hair still looks greasy.

Dry hair shampoo with oatmeal and baking soda. Ingredients: 1/2 cup of ground oatmeal and 1/2 cup of baking soda. Rub the prepared powder into greasy areas of your head and keep it for awhile to let it absorb the grease. Then brush your hair thoroughly and shake it to remove the powder.

Some more simple home recipes of dry shampoo mixtures:

  • 1 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup of starch (cornstarch is better because of its larger grains);
  • 1 cup of bran and 1/2 cup of mustard powder;
  • 1/2 cup of ground almonds and 1/2 cup of wholemeal flour;
  • 1/2 cup of ground oat flakes and 1/2 cup of baking soda;
  • 1 cup of baby powder (talc) and 1 cup of cornstarch (you can even use baby powder alone).

You can also add a few drops of essential oils to any of the recipes above. Tea tree oil has a pronounced antibacterial effect. Essential oil of peppermint is very refreshing. Cedar, lavender, bergamot and lemon oils are suitable for dry hair.

This type of hair shampoo is ideal for blond hair but it can also work well for chestnut, black or dark blond hair. Simply replace the powder base of these recipes with cocoa powder. You hair will look good and smell delicious.

The general rules for the use of any dry shampoo are as follows. Divide your hair into strands before you apply the mixture. Rub it thoroughly into the scalp and hair roots, then brush it out. Repeat if necessary. However, you should keep in mind that you should not use only dry shampoo all the time, as it doesn’t clean your scalp and hair completely. The best option is to interchange dry shampoo and usual one.
